On Saturday 11 July, two incidents occurred in which smoke was detected on the roof of light rail vehicles on the L2 Randwick and L3 Kingsford lines. In both cases, passengers and drivers safely disembarked, no injuries were reported and safety systems worked as designed.

Our investigations have identified that the incidents involved batteries from a specific batch, which have now been withdrawn from service across the fleet. Vehicles currently operating on the L2 and L3 lines do not use the affected batch of batteries.

We’re working closely with our fleet manufacturer, Transport for NSW and relevant safety authorities in returning all vehicles to service.

We understand the concern these incidents have caused for our customers and the community. We’re committed to the safety of our passengers and ensuring a thorough response to these incidents.

Passengers are encouraged to listen to announcements, check information displays and visit transportnsw.info for the latest service information.
