Transdev has joined forces with Souths Cares in a two-year partnership to benefit southern and western Sydney communities and support the training, employment and wellbeing of local youth and First Nations peoples.

The major partnership with Souths Cares, the South Sydney Rabbitohs’ independent charity, supports communities through capacity-building programs across health, employment and education to make a positive impact.

The partnership includes championing community events and programs such as an Education and Wellbeing Expo held last week and  Souths Cares’ upcoming end-of-year NAIDOC celebration.

Participants in Souths Cares’ programs will also be able to interact with Transdev in making important decisions about further education or employment opportunities whilst at school, as well as taking part in Transdev and Souths Cares events.

Souths Cares CEO Alisha Parker-Elrez said everyone at Souths Cares was thrilled about this partnership.

“We know it’ll make a difference to the lives of many participants in our existing and future programs,” Ms Parker-Elrez said.

“We teamed up with Transdev because of their commitment to the community, not only locally but right across the country.

“They’ve shown they’re genuine in providing opportunities and experiences for our program participants.

“Transdev was front and centre at our Education and Wellbeing Expo and will help put smiles on people’s faces throughout the Christmas period at our Souths Cares NAIDOC end-of-year celebrations.

“We’re all very excited to work with the team at Transdev over the next two years with a view to extending the partnership for years to come, providing positive outcomes for our community.”

Transdev Australasia Chief Executive Luke Agati said Transdev was proud to partner in a holistic capacity building partnership.

“This is about cultural respect, deepening relationships and supporting self-determination of First Nations Australian youth and their families,” Mr Agati said.

“We move people every day on public transport right across Sydney and we also want to be a positive influence in those local communities that we serve.

“This is a practical and meaningful step towards advancing reconciliation, whilst promoting sustainable employment opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across our businesses.

“This partnership will help support that journey on many fronts through mentoring, training and rewarding career pathways through our Transdev and Transdev John Holland depots and other on-site visits, talks and events.”

Mr Agati said Transdev valued people from diverse backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives to boost creativity and enable better decision making, which is why this partnership would be a success.

“Our overriding goal is do social and economic good in the communities in which we work, serve and learn.

“It’s why we’re dedicated to progressing our commitments under our Reconciliation Action Plan as well as advancing our diversity, equity and inclusion aspirations.

“We’re thrilled and honoured to partner with South Cares to co-create and deliver a range of programs and activities to increase heath, training and career prospects of many First Peoples of Australia.”

Transdev runs public transport across Sydney, including the iconic Sydney Harbour ferries, Sydney trams and buses across eastern Sydney (via Transdev John Holland) and in greater western Sydney.

Souths Cares was established in 2006 as an independent, public benevolent institution. The Souths Cares charity has been built upon the South Sydney Rabbitohs’ long and proud history of supporting the community, in particular Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people. Its charter is to support disadvantaged and marginalised youth and their families through the delivery of capacity building programs addressing education, training, health and employment needs.

The Queensland Deputy Premier Dr Steven Miles announced a $1.5 million commitment for the buses under the State Government’s Hydrogen Industry Development Fund.

Transdev will match the $1.5m investment to purchase the two hydrogen fuel cell buses to service the eastern suburbs of Brisbane from its Capalaba depot.

Transdev Queensland Managing Director Mark McKenzie said he was proud of securing the funding and the Government’s commitment to growing the hydrogen industry and its opportunities.

“The State Government has already backed zero emission vehicles and now we look forward to what hydrogen has to offer,” Mr McKenzie said.

“Transdev is not only investing in the buses but also working with suppliers in building the necessary hydrogen supply infrastructure at our depot and the upskilling of our staff.

“The buses will be built by Volgren using a Wrightbus Hydrogen chassis and we look forward to testing these buses on city roads, providing valuable data to Translink and the Queensland Government about their performance.

“Our local Brisbane team is also excited to grow our own local hydrogen expertise using the experience of our global Transdev teams in running zero emission fleets right around the world.”

Transdev delivers more than two million passenger trips each year on passenger, school and charter services across Redlands and Brisbane via a fleet of about 109 diesel buses.

In Brisbane, Transdev also runs an electric bus which was Australia’s first 100% sustainably powered full-size electric bus powered by a massive rooftop solar generation system at the depot.

The new $1.3 billion contracts come into effect from 2 October 2022.

Transdev Australasia Chief Executive Luke Agati said the 10-year renewal was recognition of the continued great work of our local WA team and further evidence of Transdev’s expertise in bus operations across Australasia.

“This is great news for us and I’m proud of our team’s partnership with Transperth and service to the local community,” Mr Agati said.

Post-pandemic, industry has seen people reflect on their career pathways to change careers completely.

Transdev operates bus services across Sydney, Brisbane and Perth and is on a recruitment drive to find 200 new drivers to join the growing team.

“Driving a bus is a technical skill that we can teach like any other – we’ve had 1000 people graduate from our Car License Upgrade programs proving that it’s perfectly achievable to attain a Heavy Vehicle License.

“What really matters for bus drivers is good communication and customer service skills.
“It’s also a great opportunity for people to find secure driving work with a competitive salary and be more connected to their community.

We are seeing applications from Uber drivers for example who are seeking that stability,” said Justin Gill, Head of Recruitment at Transdev Australasia.

Transdev started working on formulating a Purpose statement in 2017, involving hundreds of team members from across the Group by holding a series of collaborative workshops around the world including in Sydney.

Our Purpose is what motivates us every day, and it is a compass and a guide for our decisions. The concept of the common good it is central to who we are, and it is for the benefit of the communities we serve and this is something we want every team member to understand and be proud of.

The Purpose campaign aims to focus Transdev team members around the shared objective to contribute to the common good which is the very nature of public transportation. It showcases the contribution of our people and reminds us that every one can make an impact.

Australia and New Zealand is proudly represented in the campaign through:

        • Sally Beltzer, Cameron Bacic, Jim Kyriacopolous and Misho Stojanovski, Sydney bus
        • Jake Gifford, Sydney Ferries
        • Naeem Iqbal, Sydney Light Rail
        • Jake Grundling, Wellington Rail
        • Laura Jones, Transdev Australasia

Our Purpose is embodied by three action verbs and express the essence of how we act; Care, Share, and Dare. They are stronger than passive values, and this is what we want to show with this campaign. It is a campaign that expresses emotion, commitment, and sincerity, like our team members around the world who we also wanted to highlight here.

This week we are highlighting the perspectives of the women of Transdev across Australia and New Zealand. The International Women’s Day theme of #breakthebias is one that we are aiming to achieve every day to attract and retain more women in transport.

We want the industry to be reflective of the diversity of our community.

"Before I began with Transdev, I was limited to finding work due to my skills not being recognised in Australia. Transdev has provided me opportunities to increase my skillset, gain valuable experiences, provides flexibility and I have more confidence. Five years ago, I would never have thought I would be a bus driver, now I have a career in Transport, and I love it. At my depot, I work in a very good environment, my colleagues are very helpful and supportive, and my Manager is fair and understanding.”
