Work Access Permits

Track works and permits

To keep the light rail safe and reliable, we carry out scheduled track maintenance across the network. Regular maintenance helps reduce the need for unplanned repairs and ensures services continue to run smoothly.

Because the light rail runs alongside roads, homes, and local businesses, some upgrades and renewal projects can be challenging. Depending on the type of work, this may mean there are temporary impacts in the area.

  • Advance notice: Residents and local businesses will always be notified before any maintenance begins.
  • Possible impacts: Works may involve some noise and changes to local traffic.
  • Environmental responsibility: The NSW Environment Protection Authority is notified of all scheduled works.
Work permits

If you are planning to carry out works on or around the light rail network, you may require a permit or in some cases an isolation of overhead or underground cables. The location of your work site could have an impact on operations, for example, moving plant or equipment across the tracks. Your work site could also influence pedestrians to walk closer to moving trams. Please download a copy of our Safe Work Around Light Rail pamphlet for further information.

The permit process also limits the risk of your works impacting our customers and employees. For your information, there are mandatory requirements under Safe Work and Rail Safety legislation to ensure we manage safety across Sydney Light Rail and Parramatta Light Rail

We are happy to conduct site visits to provide advice on permit requirements for your planned works. We hold a number of shutdowns throughout the year to allow works that cannot be carried out during normal passenger operations.

If a permit is required, you will be asked to complete a permit application. If you have any doubt, then please contact either Slr.permits@transdev.com.au  or grclr.permit@greatrivercity.com.au for advice.

We appreciate your help keeping our team, your team and the community safe. By following the permit to work process, we can minimise the risk that your work party is injured by moving trams or electrocution.

The picture below depicts the Danger Zone, which is an area that is potentially exposed to moving tram and electrocution risk. By following the permit to work process, we can assist you in limiting risks associated with working near or in the Danger Zone.
