Work Access Permits
Track works and permits
Keeping the light rail safe and reliable
To keep Sydney’s light rail network safe and reliable, we carry out scheduled track maintenance throughout the year. Regular maintenance helps reduce the need for unplanned repairs and ensures services continue to run smoothly.
Because the light rail operates alongside roads, homes, and local businesses, some upgrade and renewal projects can occasionally cause temporary impacts. Depending on the type of work, this may include noise, traffic changes, or altered pedestrian access. Residents and local businesses will always receive advance notice of scheduled works, and the NSW Environment Protection Authority is also notified.
Work Permits
Under Safe Work and Rail Safety legislation, there are mandatory requirements to manage safety across the Sydney and Parramatta Light Rail networks, see Safe Work Around Light Rail.
If you’re planning works on or near the light rail corridor, you may need a permit, particularly where overhead or underground cables may be affected. Permits help ensure your work does not impact tram operations or customer safety. For example, certain worksites can influence pedestrian movement near moving trams.
We’re happy to conduct site visits to discuss permit requirements and provide guidance on your planned works. Scheduling your works during planned shutdowns helps minimise disruptions to passengers and ensures safer access for your teams.
If a permit is required, you’ll be asked to complete an application form. All persons working on or immediately adjacent to light rail must complete the Working on Light Rail Induction.
The process of obtaining a permit can help to manage the risks associated with working near or within the Danger Zone — an area that may expose workers to the movement of trams and the risk of electrocution.
