One of only 119 organisations in Australia to have received the citation, it is a strong endorsement of our ongoing commitment to gender equality and promoting diversity across the transport industry in Australia and New Zealand.

The WGEA citation is a leading practice recognition program that goes beyond compliance with the Workplace Gender Equality Act.

Criteria for the citation cover leadership, learning and development, gender remuneration gaps, flexible working and other initiatives to support family responsibilities, employee consultation, preventing sex-based harassment and discrimination, and targets for improving gender equality outcomes.

Transdev Australasia’s Head of Talent, Diversity and Inclusion and Learning and Engagement, Donna Jones, said the citation was a welcome endorsement of a commitment to diversity across all levels of the organisation.

“We have introduced a range of initiatives in the last two years including Journey Maker Academies that aim to address barriers women faced in participating in operational and front line roles in public transport by providing a tailored learning experience.

“We established a gender neutral parental leave policy and supported our Male Champions of Change to call out any potential everyday sexism by promoting the strong key message ‘It’s not okay today’ which was backed by training to help people call out sexism in the workplace in a non-confrontational way.

“Diversity is more than a metric to us – it is important that our organisation reflects the diversity of the communities we serve everyday,” she said.

WGEA Director Libby Lyons commented that the strategic and targeted action taken by citation holders was translating to faster progress in gender equality.

“They are closing their pay gap and increasing their representation of women in management at a faster rate than other employers in our data set.”

The Transdev Graduate program has been ranked 43 in the 2020 listing of Australia’s Top 100 Graduate Employers.

In 2019, Transdev was ranked 56 so it is encouraging to see the program’s quality being recognised with a ranking increase in only the third year since its launch.

This year, the program was also recognised as finalists in the 2020 AFR Graduate Employers Awards.

Interviewed by the AFR, our Talent Acquisition Manager, Amanda Selleck, commented on graduates increasingly opting to choose purpose-driven roles:

“The graduates who align to Transdev and our values – giving back to the community, being community-minded, having the corporate social responsibility mindset of wanting to make a sustainable change – they are the ones that work the best.

“They are here for purpose. And it doesn’t matter if they are working in an office, or if they’re in health and safety, or on the network; they can correlate exactly what they’re doing to having a sustainable impact on my local community.”

Our 18-month program provides graduates a blend of operational and function specific experience and training. We provide leadership development opportunities and a mentor program to ensure people can navigate their own path to success in our global organisation.

Rose Taikato is the latest train driver to graduate after an intensive nine months of training.

Rose came to the role after a tough few years with the tragic death of some family members and close friends, which made her realise life was too short and she wanted to make some major changes.

After 17 years living in the small town of Patea and working with local Iwi as a Kaumatua Program Coordinator, she started a search further afield for a new job. Patea had been a great place to bring up her four children but she felt it was time to leave the small town.

One of the many roles she applied for was a train driver in Wellington. It took two and a half months to get through the various levels of testing, but one by one, she passed and progressed through to the training school.

While it wasn’t necessarily a job she would have thought to apply for, she is really glad she did. “I wish I’d found this job 10 years ago. It’s nice to get a good job with good pay, and even be able to help others out.

When I started I was impressed by the number of staff who have worked here for 30, 40, even 50 years, which is proof that it must be a great role and place to work or people wouldn’t stay for so long. There are lots of great people here including the trainers and tutors.”

Rose describes learning to drive a train like learning a whole new language:  “The rules, codes and engineering details of how a train works and how to troubleshoot technical issues are very different to driving a car on the road. The Locomotive Engineer training process also involves lots of supervised driving hours. Each time I had a new tutor I would be nervous that they would be really tough, but each tutor made me feel comfortable within the first hour, and each tutor taught me something different.”

Rose brings a wealth of life experience to the role, with four children who have now all moved out of home and are independent, two of which have children of their own. “My kids are really proud of me. My oldest daughter is now keen to take steps to become a driver over in Australia where she lives.”

Rose would encourage anyone looking for a new job to apply, particularly Maori, female and those living in small towns who might not typically think to apply.

“You can do anything you put your mind to –  I hadn’t even dreamed of becoming a train driver, but now here I am qualified and driving hundreds of rail passengers!”

“Transdev welcomes Rose to the team! It’s great to have an enthusiastic new driver on board. Our trainers, tutors and Team Leaders have nothing but good things to say about Rose. We hope she has a long and satisfying driving career in Wellington, like so many who have come before her,” says Transdev’s Managing Director, Ian Ladd.

Over the past few weeks we have seen a tremendous amount of community spirit and generosity emerge from the devastation of the bushfires.

Businesses, families and communities all want to reach out and make a difference. It is clear that the impact of these fires will continue to be felt throughout the year.

Transdev Australasia will donate $30,000 to the Australian Red Cross to provide a contribution to the direct support that is needed now.

Locally our teams across our bus, light rail and ferry operations in Australia have been organising fundraising events to support key bushfire relief agencies and established a group fundraising page

Supporting our people during this time is of utmost importance to us and we will be providing special leave on full pay to the volunteer fire fighters in the team and additional leave and support to employees in our team who have been directly impacted by the bushfires.

Serving and supporting the communities in which we work will always be part of the Transdev spirit.

Transdev Australasia is pleased to announce that it has proudly started, on December 14, passenger services of the all-new Sydney light rail L2 Randwick Line between Sydney’s Circular Quay and Randwick, via Central Station.

The key benefits of the new light rail line include:

                  • creating improved urban experience, reducing congestion and promoting sustainability;
                  • offering better public transportation with more connections for more people; and
                  • boosting the economy by easily taking people to the districts where they live, work and relax.

This Sydney milestone is a powerful endorsement of Transdev’s global leadership in operating 25 light rail systems in 10 countries and comes as the final highlight of 2019 for Transdev in the light rail field, marked by numerous successes around the world. The year started with the Stage 1 Parramatta light rail (Sydney) contract in January, the extension of the Luas Dublin (Ireland) light rail contract in June, the contract for the Hurontario light rail in Canada and the commissioning of two light rail networks in France (Avignon, Saint-Etienne) in the fall. I am particularly proud of the achievements of Transdev light rail teams around the world,” stated Thierry Mallet, Chairman and CEO of Transdev Group.

Light rail is an environmentally-focused transportation mode that will reduce greenhouse gases and noise pollution to provide clean, efficient travel. It will provide a sustainable public transportation option to customers who live, work and travel within the CBD and South East, easing the pressure on Sydney’s roads by reducing the city’s reliance on cars and buses.

Among its environmental credentials: over 30 years, the Sydney Light Rail project will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 663,000 tonnes by lowering bus and car use. As a reminder, light rail uses 10 times less energy than a car, per passenger kilometre.

In 2014, Transport for NSW (TfNSW) entered into a public private partnership with ALTRAC Light Rail (ALTRAC) to operate and maintain the Inner West Light Rail (L1 Dulwich Hill Line), and to design, build, finance, operate and maintain the new L2 and L3 Lines until 2036.

ALTRAC is a consortium consisting of Alstom, Acciona, Transdev and Capella Capital, which has contracted operations and maintenance (O&M) obligations to Transdev Australasia.

Passenger services on the L3 Kingsford Line between Circular Quay and Juniors Kingsford are expected to open in March 2020, seeing an additional five stops added to the network.

Santa, the Minister for Public Transport and Transdev have teamed up today to complete a very special delivery in Victoria’s first locally built, fully electric bus.

Santa called on the Minister to help him collect and deliver donated Christmas gifts for kids in foster care and residential care, as part of the annual MacKillop Family Services Christmas Drive.

As part of the drive, Transdev’s elves collect and pack gifts generously donated by local schools and businesses to ensure kids in care can have a present to open on Christmas Day.

MacKillop’s Director of Community Engagement, Sam Patterson said that Christmas can be a difficult time of year for kids in care, who are often unable to spend the festive season with their birth family.

“Celebrating traditions helps create a tremendous sense of belonging.

“Thanks to the generous support of local schools and businesses such as Transdev, we can ensure every child in care will have a present under the Christmas tree this year,” said Mr Patterson.

In previous years, MacKillop had struggled to collect gifts and asked Transdev if they could help this year.

“We are very grateful for Transdev’s support – in the past our staff have had to drive around collecting presents.

“It’s time consuming and takes staff away from doing what they do best – supporting vulnerable kids and families,” said Mr Patterson.

Transdev’s Chief Officer, Bus Operations Ian Craig said he was delighted that Transdev could support such a worthwhile cause.

“We believe in giving back to the communities in which we operate, and what better way of doing that than ensuring vulnerable Victorian kids, get the special Christmas they deserve.

“Our business is all about people moving people, so it is really not much of a stretch to help Santa move some presents for kids in need,” said Mr Craig.

Transdev also donated over $1,000 worth of toys and conducted a donation drive among its staff.

Kids come into care at all ages, from babies to seventeen year olds, across all cultural, religious, and socio-economic backgrounds. All kids have experienced some form of abuse, neglect or trauma.

Transdev, in partnership with Transport for NSW, this week announced a new high frequency Turn Up and Go shuttle bus trial commencing 18 November to provide a direct link between Lilli Pilli Point and Caringbah Station during peak times.

The 980 bus route is dedicated to getting local residents and visitors to and from Lilli Pilli Point and Caringbah Station, along Port Hacking Road which is one of the suburb’s busiest corridors.

The Turn Up and Go service will operate every 10 minutes between 6am to 9am to Caringbah Station and 4pm to 8:30pm to Lilli Pilli Point.

The trial will cater for customers who normally drive and park at the station. Customers can tap on and off using their Opal card, credit and debit cards and linked smart devices.

Opal bus fares apply and customers will receive all Opal travel rewards such as the $2 Opal transfer discount if they change between a train and a bus within 60 minutes.

Customers will need to be aged 7 years and over to travel on the Turn Up and Go vehicle as per road vehicle and safety requirements. Customers should plan their trip at www.transportnsw.info.

The Turn Up and Go shuttle buses seat 11 passengers and will run on a new 980 route alongside the existing 977 bus route operated by Transdev and will run for a 6 month trial period.

“Transdev is passionate about providing more personalised public transport options for our customers. By offering a point-to-hub connection in Caringbah, we are hoping to encourage greater public transport use for people who would normally drive to the station,” said Transdev’s Head of New Mobility, David Le Breton.

Transdev is a global leader in on demand public transport solutions and has successfully trialled a number of on demand transport pilots across NSW in Manly and the Sutherland Shire, and recently launched a new On Demand Ferry connecting the new Barangaroo precinct to popular tourist spots along the harbour.

Turn up and Go will go live after the 24-month Sutherland Shire On Demand trial service is completed on 17 November.

“Transdev is passionate about providing more personalised public transport options for our customers.

By offering a point-to-hub connection in Caringbah, we are hoping to encourage greater public transport use for people who would normally drive to the station,” said Transdev’s Head of New Mobility, David Le Breton.
